Civil Litigation

Civil litigation involves the prosecution or defense of a lawsuit. A lawsuit is an action filed in civil court by a Plaintiff who claims to have been wronged by a Defendant's actions, and who seeks money damages or equitable relief (such as an injunction).

If the Plaintiff is successful, a judgment will be given in the Plaintiff's favor. The court will then issue a range of court orders to enforce a right, award money damages, or impose an injunction to prevent an act or compel an act. A declaratory judgment may also be issued to prevent future legal disputes.

A lawsuit may involve dispute resolution of private law issues between individuals, business entities or non-profit organizations. A lawsuit may also in some cases enable the government be treated as if it were a private party.
