If you have been accused of committing a crime, your future and possibly your freedom are at stake. If you are new to the criminal justice system, you may turn to family and friends for advice. Although everyone may have an opinion, along with well-meaning advice, it is crucial to remember that there is no substitute to experienced legal advice and guidance. A wrong step early on could do irreparable damage to the outcome of your case. With that in mind, it is important to follow a few basic guidelines. First and foremost, do not discuss the details of your case with anyone except a licensed attorney. Your conversation with your attorney is confidential; however, anything you say to anyone else could be used against you at trial. It isn’t a matter of trust but a matter of law. Second, you have a constitutional right to remain silent. You must exercise that right, however, for it to protect you. Do not speak to the police or the prosecuting attorney without an attorney present. No exceptions.

Sadly, the highly emotional nature of family law cases frequently brings out the worst in people. People who once loved each other turn into enemies overnight. Even the joy that the process of adopting a child brings can be filled with tension and worry until the adoption is finalized. Given the importance of the outcome, don’t try to handle a custody battle, adoption, divorce, or guardianship alone. Instead, allow us to help you successfully litigate the issue or dispute. The family law attorneys at Bennett & Michael have witnessed first hand the emotional and often contentious nature of family law legal matters.
