Located in central Tennessee and covering 475 square miles, Bedford County was home to 45,058 residents as of the 2010 Census. Once the state’s largest and most populous county, Bedford County’s size (in terms of area) has been steadily reduced since 1809. The county was created in 1807 when the citizens of Rutherford County living south of the Duck River and the Stones River successfully petitioned the governor to split Rutherford County in two. The new county was named after American Revolutionary War officer and large landowner in the area, Thomas Bedford.

Home to the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration, the City of Shelbyville, Bedford County and many surrounding communities are world famous for playing host to an annual celebration of the incredible gait of this captivating horse. Gorgeous horse farms and thousands of pastured acres throughout the county are speckled with the vibrant and frolicking lineage of some of the greatest champion Tennessee Walking horses ever bred. Bedford County is also known as a beef producing region. Cattle farmers in Bedford County contribute significantly to the State’s annual production of beef destined for the consumer market. The county’s pure limestone aquifer’s and springs provide an important ingredient for much of this country’s Tennessee Sippin Whiskey. George Dickel Distillery is located at the edge of Bedford County along the Coffee County border and the famed Jack Daniel Distillery is located just across our Southeastern border in Metropolitan Moore County, once a part of Bedford County.
