Rutherford County, Tennessee

Located in the middle of the State of Tennessee, Rutherford County covers over 600 square miles and is home to over 300,000 residents, making it the fifth most populous county in the state.  The county was originally formed in 1803 from parts of Davidson, Williamson and Wilson counties and was named in honor of Griffith Rutherford (1721–1805). Rutherford was a North Carolina colonial legislator, an American Revolutionary War general, and was appointed President of the Council of the Southwest Territory in 1794 and eventually settled in the area after the Revolutionary War.

Like most of its neighbors, Rutherford County was a strong supporter the Confederacy during the Civil War, having voted 2,392 to 73 in favor of Tennessee’s Ordinance of Secession on June 8, 1861. The county would eventually be the location of one of the bloodiest battles of the war, the Battle of Stones River, which was fought between December 31, 1861, and January 2, 1862. On July 13, 1862, Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest conducted a series of cavalry operations known locally as Forrest’s Raid. The raid successfully led to the surrender of all Union forces occupying the area. Soon after his departure, Union troops returned to the area and held it until the end of the war.

Located just 20 miles southeast of Nashville, the county seat of Murfreesboro has become known as a “bedroom community” as Nashville’s size continues to grow. The county has been growing at a fairly steady rate, along with Nashville, since the 1990s.

Residents and visitors to Rutherford County can enjoy numerous historical sites, including:

  • Bradley Academy Museum — the first school established in Rutherford County.
  • Cannonsburgh Village — represents approximately 100 years of early Tennessee life from the 1830s to the 1930s.
  • Fortress Rosecrans — served as a critical forward supply base for the Federals during their campaigns to seize and hold the vital rail junction town of Chattanooga, Tennessee in 1863.
  • Historic Courthouse — built in 1859, it is one of only six remaining Tennessee courthouses from before the Civil War.
  • Oaklands Historic House Museum — a nationally registered, historic landmark reflects a time of prosperity in the Old South, as well as the hardships suffered during the Civil War.
  • Sam Davis Home and Museum — the Sam Davis Home is preserved to keep alive the story of Sam Davis, his family, and the people who labored on this Middle Tennessee farm before, during, and after the Civil War.
  • Stones River National Battlefield — the Battle of Stones River began on the last day of 1862 and was one of the bloodiest conflicts of the Civil War, ultimately producing important military and political gains for the Union.
