Wartrace

Located in Bedford County, Tennessee, the town of Wartrace covers less than one square mile. Nicknamed “The Cradle of the Walking Horse,” Wartrace had a population of 651 residents as of the 2010 Census.

The town, originally known as Wartrace Depot, was a stop along the Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad during the middle of the 19th century. The name “Wartrace” refers to a Native American trail that once passed through the area. As rail travel increased, the town grew toward the end of the 19th century. At one point, 13 trains a day passed through the town creating the need for six inns and hotels. The Walking Horse Hotel was among those hotels and remains open to this day. Likewise, the historic Walking Horse and Eastern Railroad continues to operate on a part-time basis. The town’s nickname, “The Cradle of the Walking Horse,” comes from the fact that at the turn of the 20th century Wartrace was a breeding center for the Tennessee Walking Horse and was the birthplace of the Wartrace Horse Show.
